Youtubers of Doom

The Doom community on YouTube has grown considerably in recent years. Below are some of the more notable channels that might interest you, listed in no particular order. Note that not all of these focus exclusively or primarily on Doom.

DavidXNewton

Newton is a relative newcomer to the Doom modding scene ('relative' considering Doom is 30 years old), yet he's already transformed himself and his channel into a valuable addition to the community.

His channel contains useful tutorials on level editing and, more importantly, Zscripting, which is infamously difficult to learn and until recently had sparse documentation. He also manages the yearly 'RAMP' projects, a community mapping event open to anybody interested. His let's plays are also quite entertaining, with Newton himself being an engaging & likable character (or 'fursona', considering his custom mug & avatar).

MtPain27

MtPain is most famous for his ongoing Dean of Doom series where he meticulously examines every level of a given mappack. The series has proven successful, with several seasons already released and more presumably underway.

Though his prose is a bit pretentious and overly analytical at times, it's hard to fault him for his dedication in bringing every major Doom campaign under the microscope for our education & amusement.

Dragonfly

Joshua O'Sullivan (alias Dragonfly, formerly Sausage) is a British Doom level designer, artist, and musician, best known as the main author of Skulldash and the Eviternity series.

He was awarded a Cacoward in 2015 and was also featured in an article in the March 2016 issue of PC Gamer. Dragonfly's levels are praised for their fast, fun, and engaging gameplay. Additionally, he writes tutorials on advanced GZDoom features and level design. Due to his mapping expertise, some consider him "the most successful project leader in the history of Doom modding." He has also been named Creator of the Year by Doomworld.

He has his own website, Dragonfly's Doomworks.

IcarusLIVES

With nearly a hundred thousand followers on his channel, IcarusLives is one of the most successful mod reviewers in the community.

He follows a 'quality over quantity' approach to his videos, often spacing uploads weeks or even months apart. However, when a new video does drop, it is typically high-quality and entertaining. He also enjoys drinking during his streams, for better or worse, depending on how badly he's getting destroyed by demons and his mood at the time.

Civvie 11

MtPain27 Image

Civvie11 is an American YouTube review channel and show focused on video game titles, particularly retro first-person shooters such as Doom, Blood, Duke Nukem 3D, Half-Life, Postal, and more

His setup is an amusing one, with Civvie roleplaying as a prisoner held captive in a sci-fi dungeon, from which he reviews games and other content.

When covering a game, he typically provides an abridged overview of each level, often reviewing one game at a time if it's part of a series (e.g., Doom) or includes expansion packs. To date, he has reviewed every single Doom title, both classic and modern.

German Peter

German Peter, as the name implies, is a German YouTuber. His content primarily focuses on analyses of various video games, which includes Doom and Wolfenstein."

He is known for engaging in unique thought experiments and mapping challenges. Notable examples include his video "How Long Could You Survive in Half-Life?", where he explores the game's world and survival possibilities, as well as his megawad project, Into Sandy's Cities, in which he attempts to recreate Sandy Petersen's distinctive mapping style.

Chubzdoomer

MtPain27 Image

Matthew Christian (alias Chubzdoomer) is a Doom level designer known for his satirical Call of Dooty mods, which parody modern military shooters. The second installment received a Mockaward at the 2012 Cacowards. Chubzdoomer also runs a YouTube channel featuring Doom mapping and scripting tutorials.

I've relied on his tutorials more than once whenever I couldn't quite figure something out on my own. He's been around for a long time, too—his older Doom Builder tutorial dates back 16 years.

Bridgeburner

MtPain27 Image

Bridgeburner is a New Zealand Doom level designer. At the 2020 Cacowards, he received the Creator of the Year title, and his map Bastion of Chaos was also awarded one of the 2020 Cacowards. He is the lead developer of the upcoming GZDoom-based game The Age of Hell and serves as a moderator on the Doomworld forums.

His level design is known for its prominent use of advanced GZDoom features and sector detailing, inspired by graphic/logo design and tattoo art. His distinctive style has been recognized as influential.

On his YouTube channel, he provides various tutorial content, teaching users how to utilize the more complex tools in Doom Builder to create advanced geometry—techniques that many newcomers to mapping may initially struggle to grasp.

GeneralLotz

The General is a lesser-known retro game reviewer and streamer with a relatively small following. However, I still feel obligated to include him here, even if only as an honorable mention, as I have a sense of nostalgia for some of his earlier videos.

He primarily reviews and streams older games, including Doom and its mods, though he has also been known to review books occasionally—including both the classic Doom novels and the more recent ones.

Lots might not be a celebrity within the Doom community, but I personally find him likable enough to include here.
