A Doom for the Modern Era
Note: This page will be updated as new content becomes available.
Project ReTexture is an asset replacement mod for Ultimate Doom, Doom II, and Final Doom. Its goal is to enhance the texture and sprite work from these classic games with more modern, high-detail alternatives, improving the game's visual presentation and atmosphere.
Why This Project Exists
Doom is one of the most iconic first-person shooters ever made and has enjoyed remarkable longevity, thanks to an active fanbase and thriving modding scene that persists to this day. However, while Doom's aesthetic is iconic, it's not perfect; much of the original texture and sprite work has aged poorly by modern standards.
To be clear, not all the original assets aged poorly. Far from it. We simply aim to replace the ones that have aged the least gracefully.
Modern Yet Familiar
The replacement assets maintain an aesthetic that faithfully reimagines the original design with a more modern, high-detail interpretation. The idea is to modernize the look without fundamentally changing it. Original color and resolution restrictions are still in place, so using a source port is not required to use the new assets (except for completely new additions).
In some ways, you could think of this as blending the visual styles of Classic Doom, Doom 64, and Doom 3. The result is something that feels nostalgic yet visually impressive, especially when combined with modern features such as those found in GZDoom.
Dev Room — Original Doom II Assets Vs New.
Long Term Development
Reimagining such a large number of assets is a massive undertaking, so full project completion will likely take years. However, we plan to release the pack incrementally, with each new release featuring redone versions of select texture sets from specific sub-themes (e.g. base, lab, industrial, hell). This way, users can benefit from the growing texture pack even before its full completion. The sprites will be handled similarly, though their recreation may be completed more quickly since there are comparatively fewer of them. We also plan to expand the number of decorative props beyond those in the original game.
